What the officer wants to read
A visa officer reading your parents' or friends' application has never met you. The invitation letter fills that gap: a named person in Canada, with a job, an address and a status, who says who is coming, why, for how long and how the stay is covered. IRCC does not issue a form for it; it publishes a list of points the letter should cover, and this page turns that list into questions.
You answer once and the letter writes itself in plain, formal English. Nothing on the page is filler: every line is something the official IRCC guidance on invitation letters asks for.
Signing alone or as a couple
Many letters come from a couple: a husband and wife inviting the husband's parents for the summer, or the wife's mother for the birth of a grandchild. Choose "Me and my spouse or common-law partner" and the letter speaks as "we", lists both of you, and has two signature lines.
When you book, each of you gets your own email and your own link. You can join the video signing from two different phones, even from two different cities, and both signatures are added to the same letter.
The super visa version
For parents and grandparents applying for a super visa, the letter must also contain a written promise of financial support for the whole visit and the list of people counted in the host's family size, with dates of birth and the total. Choose "A super visa" at the top and those parts appear.
You can add a line about your employment and income if you want it in the letter. The proof itself, such as tax assessments or pay stubs, is sent with the application, so the letter does not need figures to be complete.
What each part asks for
| Part of the letter | What to have ready |
|---|---|
| About you | Date of birth, job title, status in Canada, home address, phone and email |
| Co-signing spouse | Their name, date of birth, status and job title |
| The guests | Names and dates of birth from their passports, home address abroad, phone, relationship to you |
| The visit | Purpose, planned arrival and departure dates, where they stay, who pays |
| Super visa | Everyone counted in your family size, with dates of birth |
Letters that weaken an application
- Dates that do not match the application. The arrival and departure in the letter should be the same as on the guests' forms and tickets.
- A relationship that is not explained. "Family friend" or "father-in-law" is clearer than nothing; officers read the letter next to the family information form.
- No status proof. IRCC asks for a copy of your citizenship or permanent resident document with the application.
- Promises the household cannot keep. For a super visa, the promise of support is read together with your proof of income.
Notarizing the letter by video
Press Book and Sign and the letter is attached to your booking. On the video signing the notary public checks each signer's photo ID, you confirm the letter and sign it on screen, and the notarized PDF is emailed to you right after, ready to send to your guests or upload to their application.

FAQ
Does the invitation letter have to be notarized?
IRCC does not always require it, but many hosts notarize it, and some visa offices or super visa checklists ask for a notarized letter.
Can my wife and I both sign?
Yes. Choose two signers; each of you joins from your own device with your own email and photo ID.
How many guests can one letter invite?
Up to four people travelling together, for example both parents and a younger sibling.
Can I download the letter?
No. It is attached to your booking and signed at your video signing; the notarized letter is emailed to you afterwards.
Do you check whether my guests will get a visa?
No. We are not immigration consultants and do not give immigration advice. We notarize the letter you wrote.
Is this the same as sponsoring my parents for permanent residence?
No. Family sponsorship for permanent residence uses separate IRCC forms. This letter supports a visit.
